Letter from the President
Almost a year ago, I became President of the SCU Alumni Association Board of Directors and asked myself an honest question:
"What does this board actually exist to do? And how can I make it better?"
Here's what the past year has taught me:
- Clarity beats activity. When you know your purpose, decisions get easier. The Alumni Board exists to be the genuine voice of 116,000+ Broncos — closing the gap between what alumni need and what the university delivers.
- Representation matters. Our 36-member board spans every decade from the 1960s to 2020s, all SCU affinity groups, and a 50/50 gender split. That diversity isn't optics — it makes us better.
- Community happens in person. 33 March Madness watch parties nationwide. Regional events from San Francisco to Beijing. One of the most meaningful moments of my year was speaking at the Gianera Society Luncheon — an event honoring Broncos who have given a lifetime (50+ years) to this community. Vintage Santa Clara 2025 saw 34% more attendees, and Grad Bash 2026 ticket sales crashed the website on Day 1.
- Leadership is about showing up. 100% of our board gave a gift this fiscal year, and many on Santa Clara’s Day of Giving. You can't ask others to invest in what you won't invest in yourself. SCU also saw more individual alumni contributors on Day of Giving than in previous years.
This year also brought new communities for healthcare professionals and Sikh alumni, Broncos@Work career programming, Broncos in the Wild alumni storytelling, and the commemoration of 145 years since the founding of the Alumni Association..
I'm proud of what this board built in 2025-2026. Even more excited about next year.
To every board member, Alumni Office teammate, and Bronco who showed up this year — thank you. You are the reason this community is special. 🐴🐴🐴
To those that are curious as to how to get involved - Vintage SCU is September 12. Reach out to the Alumni office to update your contact information, attend your local community events, and/or be on the look out for Alumni Board applications in early December.
